There are lots of very technical descriptions of what kinesiology is and isn’t on the internet. Here is my explanation:
The word kinesiology (pronounced kin-easy-ology) actually means the science of movement, the study of the mechanics and anatomy of human muscles. In other words, how our muscles move our bones. Our skeleton, formed by our bones, gives us our structure and our framework and our muscles, attached to our bones, give us our shape and our ability to move. Our muscles literally pull our bones to enable us to move, however, our muscles can only pull, they cannot push. It is physically impossible for a muscle to push a bone.
When I want to raise my forearm towards my body (as when doing a bicep curl with a weight), my bicep literally pulls my forearm up, when I want to put my arm back down again, my triceps (the muscle at the back of my upper arm) pulls my forearm down again. If both muscles are pulling (in kinesiology terms we call that state ‘switched on’) at the same time they would pull against each other. I would not be able to move my forearm. So when the bicep is switched on (pulling) the triceps has to switch off (yield). Muscles work in pairs generally and this is how we move around.
The ‘switching on’ and ‘switching off’ of muscles also happens in relation to stress – you will have seen a person under extreme stress unable to move – sort of rabbit in the headlights stance – and you will also probably have seen a person receiving bad news have to sit down because their legs have given way (even though they are still conscious and have not feinted). These are the two extremes of switched on and switched off muscles.
The in-between place, where the muscles are switching on and off in balance is the physiological response we can utilise with kinesiology.
Kinesiology works by determining stress to the body via the subtle energy system. By incorporating the body’s energetic system (as in meridians, chakras and auras) and applying it to the physiological function described above, we can use this function to determine what is happening in the body and what is needed to balance the energy system against the stress.
A ‘stress’ can be a literal mental stress, i.e. thoughts, an emotional state, an allergen, a state of mind, a belief, an emotional block etc.
What happens in a consultation?
When you come to see me you will find a safe, comfortable environment where you can tell me what you are experiencing now and what change you would like to achieve. Everything you tell me is absolutely confidential and stays in the room. I have built my reputation on holding that boundary and consider maintaining it as vital to maintaining my practice and your safety.
My job is to listen, without judgement, so that I can understand your situation and/or symptoms. Everything is absolutely confidential. Once I understand where you are now and what you want to achieve I will ask you to take your shoes off and lay on my treatment couch. You keep all your other clothes on. If laying down is difficult for you then we can work with you sitting in a chair.
Generally, you will come to see me for one of two reasons either something is happening which you do not want, or something is not happening which you wish to happen.
What happens in the treatment?
Using the functioning of the muscles described above, I will use a ‘muscle test’ to determine what you need to make a change, improve a situation or overcome a block. This is a very gentle process and is not about strength.
I am working with a subtle muscle response to give me information about the balance of your subtle energy system. I consider this work a privilege and believe it should be a considerate, respectful and gentle process. Any muscle in the body can be tested but generally I use the arms and legs as indicators.
Whilst I am working with you I will give you information about what I am doing and the results I am getting. You will be able to ask me questions during the treatment and we will work together to determine what you need.
The treatment is holistic (it considers the whole of you not just the symptoms) so I may give nutrition advice, ask you to make a change to your environment or give you home support to deepen the work done during the session. Generally, treatment involves the use of meridian energy, acupressure, flower essences and hands on work to balance subtle energy.
It is an interactive process, you are involved at every stage.
Will I be able to find out things you don’t want me to know?
No. Kinesiology is about accessing your subtle energy and sub-conscious to find solutions and strategies so that you can heal, embrace changes and move forward. You will only show me the things that are a priority for you right now and those things you are willing to deal with or share with me. I know this sounds a little weird but I have learned this from my years of working with clients.
I had been working with someone for a number of years when she came for a session. During the session she revealed to me that she had experienced a great trauma when she was very young. She was ready to share this with me because I had built trust with her over the years. She was ready to deal with the event and move on in her life. She could only do that with me because we had built that relationship and she felt safe. Kinesiology is respectful of your boundaries at every level.
Is there anything which kinesiology cannot help?
I am hesitant to say ‘no’ to this question because I am always wary of anything which claims to be a panacea. In theory it should be possible to help with anything the client presents but in reality kinesiology is a tool and any tool is only as good as the person using it. There are good practitioners as well as bad ones and the limitations therefore stem from that. Practitioners usually have a particular interest, their own experience or a particular skill in certain areas.
My experience of receiving kinesiology for myself has been that it gives me a better understanding of myself, insights to my behaviour, my strengths and confidence in how to move forward with what I want to do or how I want to be.
What are my particular skills?
My expertise is in skin disorders and emotional issues. As a young child I suffered with eczema and this re-presented itself at certain times in my adult life. In fact it was the main influence in my becoming a practitioner. My own personal development at Spectrum in Finsbury Park, London lead to my studying psychotherapy for four years and this combined with my interest in the Bach Flower remedies, has influenced my work towards emotional issues.
I am also passionate about empowering you to be the best you can be and achieve your dreams and goals. All too often I meet people who are living an unsatisfactory life and wishing things were different. With the appropriate support we can achieve what we desire – even though we may have to face difficult challenges to get there. A few years ago I made a major life change. I needed a lot of courage to make the change, belief in myself to be able to manage the impact of that change on my wellbeing and the self-awareness to know that it was right for me. Kinesiology supported me to find the path through to the happy, self-fullfilled and free place I am in now.
Will other treatments or medicine be affected by the treatment?
No, the treatment complements rather than hinders any other treatment, medicine or therapy you may be undertaking. It works with your body’s natural healing energy. As explained above, with the muscle test we are asking your body what you need. You will not ask for anything which will harm you. Obviously, my skill at muscle testing is a determining factor here and where medicines are concerned I always recommend that the GP is informed and consulted. It is always better to err on the side of caution if there is any concern.
What are some of the specific benefits of the treatment?
The treatment balances the energy system and reduces stress in the body resulting in better organ function, a calmer mind and often a restoration of hope. Generally when we are balanced we feel clearer, have more energy and are more able to achieve our goals in life.
If you have no specific ‘issues’ then a regular balance (the name for the treatment) will result in a feeling of wellbeing, calm and relaxation.
